GPA plays a very important role in university application. However, to choose the right courses and maintain good grades is not easy, no matter in AP, IB or A-Level systems. Therefore ValueLearning has established the GPA Support program. Firstly consultants provide professional guidance and suggestions to help students select the right courses for them; then the teaching team looks into the schools, courses, teachers’ requirement and rubrics, and use the information to design the curriculum accordingly; lastly experienced teachers teach the students the relevant contents and the necessary abilities. In this way students can choose the suitable courses with academic values and maintain good grades.

CASE

STUDENT

Zhao’s background: Zhao studied at a top boarding school, Choate Rosemary Hall. Even though Choate doesn’t offer AP subjects, some of its own Honor and Advanced courses already have reached the level of APs and students who finish those courses are likely to take the AP exams. Zhao took Environmental Science Honors and Advanced Chemistry Honors at Choate and wanted to take AP Environmental Science and AP Chemistry exams. On one hand Zhao wanted to maintain very good GPAs in both subjects; on the other hand he also wanted to achieve 5s in both of the AP exams. However he was very busy and didn’t have much time to take a lot of prep classes.

What we did

The first phase was to focus on GPA, making sure that Zhao understood what his teachers at school taught and that he met the teachers’ requirements.

On top of that, ValueLearning teachers also added those contents that were not covered at his school but required by AP exams.

He was advised to take the final prep and practice classes, familiarizing himself with the exams and the methods to achieve high marks.

SAT subject tests can show students’ abilities in certain subjects they choose. Students are required to submit the scores of 2-3 subjects by some universities during the application process. Therefore SAT subject test is of great importance. The SAT subject tests can be divided into five categories with 20 subjects: mathematics, science, literature, history and languages. ValueLearning offers most of them. In addition to the common subjects, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and US history, the uncommon subjects can also be provided, including Latin, Spanish, French, world history, and English literature. Moreover, ValueLearning’s teachers are very familiar with not only the SAT subject tests but also other exams, such as AP, IB, and A-Level. They can help the students plan and prepare to combine different tests and exams and make the most of the students’ time.

CASE

STUDENT

Zac’s background: Zac studied at an international school in Beijing. He was determined to become a doctor in the future, and therefore it was important for him to study chemistry, preferably AP Chemistry. His college application consultant also suggested that he should take SAT Chemistry. His goals were to achieve high scores in both AP Chemistry and SAT Chemistry exams.

What we did

ValueLearning arranged a very experienced teacher who carefully listened to the needs and current situation. The teacher designed a curriculum for Zac,

which was to focus on AP Chemistry prep mainly, but at the same time to add SAT Chemistry content and practice.

The teacher knew both exams very well, and integrated the teaching and learning, which helped tremendously

Since 2013, ValueLearning has been devoted to tutoring various international curriculums, exams and competitions. During this process, we have served a large number of Chinese students from international schools, international divisions, American high schools, and high schools in other countries. They have some problems in common, for example lack of knowledge about the global issues, lack of original ideas, and lack of knowledge and training regarding lab report writing. These problems have affected not only their studies and grades, but also their social lives. Therefore ValueLearning has designed and launched the signature courses. The courses teach students effective solutions to the commonly encountered problems, and improve their abilities. In return, the students can see their grades increase and adjust themselves well to the international environment.

course

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES AND LEADERSHIP

Introduction

Many Chinese students, even with very high TOEFL scores and good English abilities, find it difficult to form their own original ideas and share them with other people in classes. They also have troubles keeping up with American students’ interests and having conversations with others in social life. What they lack is not the language ability, but rather some knowledge about the world and current events. More importantly, they lack critical thinking.

Goals

Therefore ValueLearning has designed and carried out the Global Perspectives and Leadership course. It helps students to understand global issues and current events, it teaches them critical thinking and communication skills.

course

LAB REPORT WRITING

Introduction

Sciences normally are Chinese students’ strong subjects. However some Chinese students, particularly high school freshmen, might have less satisfactory grades in science subjects. The major reason is that they don’t know how to write lab reports which normally account for 15-25% of the GPA.

Goals

Therefore ValueLearning has designed and carried out the Lab Report Writing course. It introduces some important concepts from physics, chemistry and biology, and then uses them as the foundation to teach the students how to write lab reports.

course

SCIENCES VOCABULARY AND LEARNING METHODS

Introduction

Other than lab report writing, there are two more problems that trouble Chinese students who take science subjects in international and oversea high schools: vocabulary and the connection between concepts, particularly in biology.

Goals

Therefore ValueLearning has designed and carried out the Sciences Vocabulary and Learning course. It teaches students the methods to understand and memorize the vocabulary, which comes from physics (40%), biology (40%) and chemistry (20%). It also teaches students to draw connections among knowledge, laying a solid foundation for the future learning in those three subjects and other science subjects.

course

HISTORY LEARNING METHODS AND ABILITIES

Introduction

Students in American high schools are required to take history classes for 2 or 3 years. For instance, some schools ask students to take World History in 9th Grade, some Ancient Civilizations, and a small number U.S History. It doesn’t matter which history class students have to take, the methods to learn them and the abilities involved are similar.

Goals

Therefore ValueLearning has designed and carried out the History Learning Methods and Abilities course. It teaches students the methods to learn history classes, such as note taking. Primary source analyzing is particularly emphasized given that it is usually Chinese students’ weak spot. It enhances students’ abilities that are the keys to succeed in history classes, such as analysis, comparison, and writing.

course

IB BRIDGE

Introduction

Students enter IBDP from either international schools or public schools may find IBDP to be much more demanding and challenging compared to their previous curriculums. Some students have troubles adjusting, which affects the grades. IBDP’s subject contents are indeed more challenging than previous systems, such as IGCSE and MYP. On top of that IBDP’s comprehensive assessment makes it exceedingly demanding. For instance, students have to complete IA, TOK, EE and CAS. Unfortunately not every school offers to teach students how to conduct research, write papers, do presentations and so on. Students have to learn all the methods and improve their capacity very quickly at IBDP, which is rather difficult for some of them.

Goals

Therefore ValueLearning has designed and carried out the IB Bridge course. It explains IB rubrics, and teaches students the methods to find topics to write, conduct research, write research papers, and do well in the presentations.
